17 December 2008. UP President Emerlinda Roman participated at the UP Chaplaincy’s Centennial Simbanggabi to mark the end of UP Centennial Celebrations with a mass at the Church of the Holy Sacrifice. At the beginning of the Centennial celebrations, Dr. Roman with Chancellors from other UP branches attended the opening mass by Jesuits at the Philippine General Hospital on January 8, 2008. At the end of the Centennial Celebrations, Frs. Romeo Intengan SJ, former Philippine Province Provincial and Jboy Gonzales SJ, UP Chaplain, presided over the 4 AM mass at the Church of the Holy Sacrifice built by Fr. John P. Delaney SJ in 1956. The Jesuits began serving the community of UP in 1910. The lantern parade in the afternoon of the 17th closed the centennial celebrations.

It also marked the end of Fr. Jboy’s stint as chaplain of the University of the Philippines in Diliman. The students of the Chaplaincy and the university, alumni, and Jesuit scholastics came to support Fr. Jboy SJ in his last mass as chaplain. After communion, the academic community prayed for UP and sang with UP Concert Chorus, UP Naming Mahal, orchestra arrangement by Michael Bulaong of the College of Music, and played by Blue Symphony and Musica Chiesa. The UP Filipiniana Dance Group, who have made their mark by doing liturgical dances, performed by artistic director Van Manalo’s the pre-mass’ Noche Buena, the Gloria, and the recessional, Emanuel. The composite choir included ICTUS, UPSCA, UPCLC, YFC, CYA and Canto Cinco (C5). The servers were from SCMG, Student Campus Ministry Group, formed by Fr. Jboy during his term. Scholastics’ Patrick Nogoy, Rico Adapon, Jun-G Bargayo, and other Jesuits who were spiritual directors of the students came.

Fr. Romeo Intengan SJ, former Provincial of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. He assigned Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ as chaplain of UP in 2003. He is an UPSCAn and finished medicine in UP Manila. He is also a surgeon.

29 June 2008. Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ, Chaplain celebrated the Holy Spirit Mass of the University of the Philippines. Christ’s Youth in Action (CYA) and Canto Cinco Music Ministry (C5) and Musica Chiesa were the musicians. The Student Campus Ministry Group (SCMG) were the readers and servers. The UP Jesuit Team and the Vocation Promotions group helped also at mass.

Musica Chiesa pays tribute to Our Mother with a new rendition of Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros’ Inang Minamahal. Aris Tuazon arranged it for the Canto Cinco (C5) Music Ministry, and was performed at the Dakilang Pag-ibig Concert at the Church of the Gesu, Ateneo de Manila University. Musica Chiesa and Canto Cinco perform at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass in UP. Many of these musicians come from the UP College of Music. Members of C5 also come from different college in the university.

30 September 2007. Canto Cinco (C5) and Musica Chiesa, UP Choirs at the 1100 AM Sunday Student Mass shared their skills by organizing choirs from Payatas to be regularly trained: from vocals to instruments, from learning vocal exercises to choosing songs for the mass. The activity was called, Kantahan at Tugtugan, held at the Richie Fernando Covered Courts, Ateneo de Manila University. The choirs came from the 13 chapels of Payatas A & B. 12 August 2007. To celebrate the community of students, the 2nd Sunday Mass was a participation of several groups: The Student Campus Ministry Group were readers, servers and commentators; Canto Cinco (C5) and Musica Chiesa provided the music; and the UP Filipiniana Dance Group enlivened the Papuri and the Recessional (Ang Puso Ko’y Nagpupuri). The Jesuit scholastics were also present. Bookmarks with the Preparatory Prayer on it were distributed to the congregation, to be prayed before they study, attend class, and pray.

The Retreat in Daily Life Program was launched with 36 students (excluding those members of religious organizations) signifying their desire to pray. Sch. Mark Lopez coordinates the Retreat in Daily Life.

At the end of the mass, we had our salu-salo of sinigang (as requested by Van Manalo, the UP Filipiniana’s choreographer and director), inihaw na liempo, cup cake from Kevin’s mom, and iced tea. More pictures here.

22 July 2007. Right after the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass, the choirs practice the songs for the next Sunday. This year, all the choirs who sing at the 11:00 AM Student Mass decided to coordinate the songs so that the congregation can follow and sing. Thus, the service songs (Alleluia, Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, Our Father and Doxology to the Our Father, and the Agnus Dei) will be sung by all the choirs for every season (Ordinary Time, Advent-Christmas, Lent, and Easter). The choirs for the Sundays are Canto Cinco (C5) [1st, 2nd, & 5th Sundays], ICTUS/UPSCA/YFC take turns every 3rd Sunday, and UP-CLC [4th Sunday].

8 July 2007. The 11:00 Sunday Student Mass was alive and happy. The choir with C5 and UPCLC, Musica Chiesa with Cedric’s new cello, a throng of Jesuit scholastics helping, and a good readers and servers from the Student Campus Ministry Group (SCMG), the mass was very meaningful. Concelebrating was Fr. Bosco Lu SJ, from the China Province. He teaches Philosophy in Fu Jen University in Taiwang. Below is the prayer from the homily which St. Ignatius of Loyola composed in the Spiritual Exercises. We, Jesuits, use is at the beginning of study, the start of class, or as the preparatory prayer before contemplation.

“Direct, we beseech Thee, O Lord, all our actions. And carry them on with Your gracious assistance. So that every prayer and work of ours, may begin from you and through you be happily ended through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

30 June 2007. The Choirs of ICTUS, CLC, C5 and Musica Chiesa practiced for better choir services at mass. In order to encourage congregations to sing and participate, we decided to have one repertoire for a liturgical season. All choirs, whenever they are to sing at mass, will sing the same Alleluia, Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, the Our Father and doxology and the Lamb of God. We have learned a few suggested Entrance and Recessional Hymns.

This plan will also minimize the materials for practices. Each choir will just have to deal with songs for the preparation of the gifts, communion, and the greatest challenge lies in the Responsorial Psalm. Hope things will turn out well.

7 June 2007. The Parish held a Triduum of masses for the celebration of the Parish fiesta on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) on 10 June 2007. The Chaplaincy sponsored the first of these masses at 6PM, with Bishop Mylo Vergara as presider. The choir, musicians and readers were the group of the Sunday 1100 AM mass: Canto Cinco (C5), Musica Chiesa, and the Student Campus Ministry Group (SCMG). We had dinner at Jollibee Katipunan after a great mass!
