UP President at the Chaplaincy’s Centennial Simbanggabi

17 December 2008. UP President Emerlinda Roman participated at the UP Chaplaincy’s Centennial Simbanggabi to mark the end of UP Centennial Celebrations with a mass at the Church of the Holy Sacrifice. At the beginning of the Centennial celebrations, Dr. Roman with Chancellors from other UP branches attended the opening mass by Jesuits at the Philippine General Hospital on January 8, 2008. At the end of the Centennial Celebrations, Frs. Romeo Intengan SJ, former Philippine Province Provincial and Jboy Gonzales SJ, UP Chaplain, presided over the 4 AM mass at the Church of the Holy Sacrifice built by Fr. John P. Delaney SJ in 1956. The Jesuits began serving the community of UP in 1910. The lantern parade in the afternoon of the 17th closed the centennial celebrations.

It also marked the end of Fr. Jboy’s stint as chaplain of the University of the Philippines in Diliman. The students of the Chaplaincy and the university, alumni, and Jesuit scholastics came to support Fr. Jboy SJ in his last mass as chaplain. After communion, the academic community prayed for UP and sang with UP Concert Chorus, UP Naming Mahal, orchestra arrangement by Michael Bulaong of the College of Music, and played by Blue Symphony and Musica Chiesa. The UP Filipiniana Dance Group, who have made their mark by doing liturgical dances, performed by artistic director Van Manalo’s the pre-mass’ Noche Buena, the Gloria, and the recessional, Emanuel. The composite choir included ICTUS, UPSCA, UPCLC, YFC, CYA and Canto Cinco (C5). The servers were from SCMG, Student Campus Ministry Group, formed by Fr. Jboy during his term. Scholastics’ Patrick Nogoy, Rico Adapon, Jun-G Bargayo, and other Jesuits who were spiritual directors of the students came.

Fr. Romeo Intengan SJ, former Provincial of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. He assigned Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ as chaplain of UP in 2003. He is an UPSCAn and finished medicine in UP Manila. He is also a surgeon.

UP Filipiniana Dance Group’s Isang Daan Concert Video Excerpts

18 November 2008. These are the video excerpts from UP Filipiniana’s Dance Concert, Isang Daan, held at the UP Theater last Saturday, 15 November 2008. The dance concert paid tribute to National Artists such as Antonio Molina (Music), Napoleon Abueva (Sculpture), Leandro Locsin (Architecture), Vicente Manansala (Painting), and Arturo Luz (Visual Arts). This is Van Manalo’s interpretation of Antonio Molina’s Misa Antoniana set in the backdrop of the UP Chapel of the Holy Sacrifice where one sees the works of our National Artists. Mr. Van Manalo is UP Filipiniana’s Artistic Director and Choreographer.

The UP Filipiniana Dance Group dances at the 11:00 AM Sunday Student Mass. Below is an excerpt of the Mass called, Misa Antoniana by Antonio Molina.

UP Filipiniana Dance Group’s “Isang Daan”

15 November 2008. The UP Filipiniana Dance Group who dances at the 11:00 AM Student Sunday Mass in UP Diliman stages, Isang Daan, a dance concert on Saturday, 15 November 2008 at 6:30 PM at the University Theater, UP Diliman. The concert pays tribute to specific works of National Artists in the fields of music, literature, sculpture, architecture, painting and dance. Choreography by Mr. Van Manalo who is also UP Filipiniana’s Artistic Director.

In one number, three works of National Artists in different fields will be featured: Missa Antoniana by Antonio Molina for Music to be performed in a simulated Chapel of the Holy Sacrifice by Leandro Locsin for Architecture (circular shape and design of the church), Rivers of LIfe emanating from the altar by Arturo Luz for the Visual Arts and the altar and the crucifix with two corpora by Napoleon Abueva for scupture. Paintings feature Vicente Manansala’s Station of the Cross. The dances will revolve around the parts of the mass such as the Kyrie and the Gloria, and the Agnus Dei composed by Antonio Molina (from Missa Antoniana).

Isang Daan, also means one road, one path. Thus the show pertains to the one path taken by mentor and student in their pursuit of excellence.

Tickets are available at the lobby of the UP Theater. Discounts are given to students.

At the College of Music’s 92nd Anniversary Gala Show

7 November 2008. The Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts, the UP Theater Administration and the UP College of Music staged the UP Orchestra and UP College of Music Artists’ Anniversary Gala 2008, celebrating the UP Centennial and the 92nd Anniversary of the UP College of Music. Together with students members of UPSCA (Student Catholic Action) and the Jesuits, we enjoyed watching Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, Handel’s Let the Bright Seraphim (from the oratorio, Samson), Vivaldi’s Laudamus Te (from Gloria in D Major), and Purcell’s opera, Dido and Aenas which tells of the love of Queen Dido for Aeneas who leaves her to travel to Italy to fulfill his destiny. Dido then takes her own life.

Magis08 Pilgrims from different experiments arrive and gather at St. Ignatius College in Riverview, NSW. It is a time for the 12,000 Magis08 pilgrims to gather as one community, sharing their varied experiences and celebrate them in liturgies, workshops, concerts, talks, catechesis, and fun parties with a lot of food and dancing. An excerpt from my journal:

12 July 2008. We arrived at 9:30 AM, Australian time, which is two hours ahead of the Philippines. We left at 8:30 PM at the Centennial Airport, boarded Philippine Airlines, took a brief stopover at Melbourne, and proceeded to Sydney. Tom SJ and the staff of Magis met us at the airport and brought us to the bus that took us to St. Ignatius College in Riverview. The campus is lovely with a panoramic view of the Lane Cove River.

At Riverview, we were brought to the school dormitories with central heating and hot water in showers and lavatories, a true comfort from Australia’s nippy winter. Dormitories had recreation rooms where we congregate and socialize. Breakfast food like cereals, milk, fruit preserves, bread, and Meadowlea low-fat butter lie in abundance. An internet room was available and a laundry area with washing machine and dryer was open for us to use. Divided into two groups (not necessarily male and female), we were billeted at Kevin Fagan Hall and at St. John’s. Confessors were regularly available. There were spaces for mass for groups who wish to celebrate the Eucharist together. And a canteen was open for extra snacks and basic necessities.

Once settled, I went to a short meeting for group leaders. The schedule was light because many groups from different countries were still arriving. He World Youth Day cross and icon arrived at 4PM, and the pilgrims brought the cross to the Gartlan Center with a liturgy with Australian indigenous welcome. This was the first time we gathered as a big group. It was unbelievable to be with other people who may be strangers to us, but share our own spirituality. At the Second field overlooking the River, dinner was a “barbie”: an outdoor steak barbecue with a lot of dancing and entertainment. Dancing was almost a necessity — or else you would freeze. It culminated with an experiment concert at Ramsay Hall: a short presentation of experiment groups from different continents. The pilgrims were able to know the experiments of the other groups.

UP College of Education at 90

1 July 2008. UP College of Education celebrates 90 years. The celebration started with a Mass with Fr. Jboy SJ, chaplain, and a program. Present were Dr. Lorna I. Paredes, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and the ever gracious Dean Dr. Vivien M. Talisayon. The students prepared the program and the awarding ceremonies.
