17 December 2008. UP President Emerlinda Roman participated at the UP Chaplaincy’s Centennial Simbanggabi to mark the end of UP Centennial Celebrations with a mass at the Church of the Holy Sacrifice. At the beginning of the Centennial celebrations, Dr. Roman with Chancellors from other UP branches attended the opening mass by Jesuits at the Philippine General Hospital on January 8, 2008. At the end of the Centennial Celebrations, Frs. Romeo Intengan SJ, former Philippine Province Provincial and Jboy Gonzales SJ, UP Chaplain, presided over the 4 AM mass at the Church of the Holy Sacrifice built by Fr. John P. Delaney SJ in 1956. The Jesuits began serving the community of UP in 1910. The lantern parade in the afternoon of the 17th closed the centennial celebrations.

It also marked the end of Fr. Jboy’s stint as chaplain of the University of the Philippines in Diliman. The students of the Chaplaincy and the university, alumni, and Jesuit scholastics came to support Fr. Jboy SJ in his last mass as chaplain. After communion, the academic community prayed for UP and sang with UP Concert Chorus, UP Naming Mahal, orchestra arrangement by Michael Bulaong of the College of Music, and played by Blue Symphony and Musica Chiesa. The UP Filipiniana Dance Group, who have made their mark by doing liturgical dances, performed by artistic director Van Manalo’s the pre-mass’ Noche Buena, the Gloria, and the recessional, Emanuel. The composite choir included ICTUS, UPSCA, UPCLC, YFC, CYA and Canto Cinco (C5). The servers were from SCMG, Student Campus Ministry Group, formed by Fr. Jboy during his term. Scholastics’ Patrick Nogoy, Rico Adapon, Jun-G Bargayo, and other Jesuits who were spiritual directors of the students came.

Fr. Romeo Intengan SJ, former Provincial of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. He assigned Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ as chaplain of UP in 2003. He is an UPSCAn and finished medicine in UP Manila. He is also a surgeon.

8 December 2008. Sch. Patrick Nogoy SJ gave a recollection to the UP CLC members at their tambayan in UP. Mass was with ICTUS. Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ, Chaplain, was presider.

5 December 2008. UP SPED had a mass at the College of Education lobby.

26 November 2008. Wednesday. The UP College of Education paid tribute to Professor Anunciacion R. Menez who passed away last 17 November 2008. The tribute began with a mass by Chaplain Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ at the CEd Training Center at 10 in the morning. After the mass, Dean Vivien M. Talisayon gave a short welcome and shared her memories of Professor Annie with her friends: Dr. Rosario Maminta, Dr. Natividad Munarriz, Dr. Maybelle Guzman, Dr. Lily Rosqueta-Rosales, Ms. Felicidad Reyes and Dr. Julian Abuso. The family of Prof. Annie was present. During the tribute, Chynah Monzon sang two songs, Angels and The Power of Your Love.

14 November 2008. The Beta Epsilon Fraternity celebrated its 79th Anniversary with an alumni homecoming and “A Remembrance Hour” incorporated in the mass held at the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice. In the Remembrance Hour, the Betans remember all their faithful departed with a roll call. Grouped by decade from the 1930s to the present, they prayed for the repose of the souls of their fraternity brothers. After the roll call, they rang a bell three times. Finally, the members recall their memories of their friends who have been examples of gentlemanly behavior. At the end of the ceremony, the president (here, Jeffrey Presinede) reads what a gentleman is from John Henry Cardinal Newman.

22 October 2008. UP Diliman’s School of Urban and Regional Planning celebrated their 43rd Founding Anniversary Celebration with a thanksgiving Mass at the Firmalino Hall at 9:00 AM. Presider was chaplain, Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ. After the mass, the Cesar O. Marquez Room was rededicated as the GIS Laboratory. In addition, they inaugurated the Student Lounge and Alumni Office. Present were Dr. Lorna I. Paredes, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Archt. Cristina V. Turalba, President of UP SAFFI; and Ms. Visitacion R. Raquid (Geodata Systems Technologies, Inc.) The inspiration message was done by Dean Candido A. Cabrido Jr. and the Proposed Upgrading of the SURP Building was presented by Archt. Felino A. Palafox Jr., UP SAFFI Board Members.

30 October 2008. Jade and Joyce Valerio would have enjoyed their vacation in their home in Mindoro. But they didn’t make it. After fetching them from the pier at midnight, their car collided with a truck and took away both of them quickly. Jade has just passed the Chem Board Exam this year; while Joyce is a freshman at UP Diliman.

Their friends and classmates requested a mass at the Pilar Herera Hall, Chem Building. Their friends brought candles and flowers. The flowers will be placed where they remember her the most (anywhere in the university) and the candles will be used on All Souls and All Saints Day.

Similar masses where held at the Education Building Theater for former faculty, Emeteria P. Lee on the 10th of October 2008 at the Benitez Hall. Dr. Emeteria P. Lee earned her B.S. in Education, cum laude (major in English, minor in Pilipino) from the University of the Philippines, her Master in Education (major in reading) from the University of Hawaii as an East-West Scholar and her Ph.D.in Education (major in educational psychology) as a Rockefeller Foundation Scholar. Starting as an instructor at U.P. High School, she retired as Professor 12 after 36 years of service to the University. In addition to teaching at the College of Education, she served in various capacities in U.P. as follows: Assistant to the Dean of Admissions; Admission Specialist; Assistant University Registrar; University Registrar; Acting Vice-President for Academic Affairs; Senior Program Development Officer and later Senior Research Fellow (UP Education Research Program-Center for Integrative Studies); Chair, Division of Educational Leadership and Professional Services-College of Education; Coordinator, Instructional Assistance and Enrichment Program-UP System Learning Resource Center She was co-author or editor of several books, instructional materials and monograph series on education and communication arts.
