17 December 2008. UP President Emerlinda Roman participated at the UP Chaplaincy’s Centennial Simbanggabi to mark the end of UP Centennial Celebrations with a mass at the Church of the Holy Sacrifice. At the beginning of the Centennial celebrations, Dr. Roman with Chancellors from other UP branches attended the opening mass by Jesuits at the Philippine General Hospital on January 8, 2008. At the end of the Centennial Celebrations, Frs. Romeo Intengan SJ, former Philippine Province Provincial and Jboy Gonzales SJ, UP Chaplain, presided over the 4 AM mass at the Church of the Holy Sacrifice built by Fr. John P. Delaney SJ in 1956. The Jesuits began serving the community of UP in 1910. The lantern parade in the afternoon of the 17th closed the centennial celebrations.

It also marked the end of Fr. Jboy’s stint as chaplain of the University of the Philippines in Diliman. The students of the Chaplaincy and the university, alumni, and Jesuit scholastics came to support Fr. Jboy SJ in his last mass as chaplain. After communion, the academic community prayed for UP and sang with UP Concert Chorus, UP Naming Mahal, orchestra arrangement by Michael Bulaong of the College of Music, and played by Blue Symphony and Musica Chiesa. The UP Filipiniana Dance Group, who have made their mark by doing liturgical dances, performed by artistic director Van Manalo’s the pre-mass’ Noche Buena, the Gloria, and the recessional, Emanuel. The composite choir included ICTUS, UPSCA, UPCLC, YFC, CYA and Canto Cinco (C5). The servers were from SCMG, Student Campus Ministry Group, formed by Fr. Jboy during his term. Scholastics’ Patrick Nogoy, Rico Adapon, Jun-G Bargayo, and other Jesuits who were spiritual directors of the students came.

Fr. Romeo Intengan SJ, former Provincial of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. He assigned Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ as chaplain of UP in 2003. He is an UPSCAn and finished medicine in UP Manila. He is also a surgeon.

12 December 2008. The Advent Recollection of the Jesuit Youth Ministry held at the Church of the Gesu, Ateneo de Manila University was successful. Students from the Universities along Katipunan, UP Chaplaincy, Miriam College, PSBA and Ateneo de Manila University attended the youth-oriented event. Many students availed of confessions, prayed and sang during the event. UP’s ICTUS, UPSCA, UPCLC, YFC, CYA and SCMG participated in the said event.

7 December 2008. Musica Chiesa, the musicians at the 11:00 AM Sunday Student mass, played the Eddie Hontiveros SJ overture, The Jesuit Music Ministry medley, the Take and Receive medley and Adeste Fideles, all orchestrations arranged by UP College of Music Michael Bulaong. The Take and Receive concert was at the Church of the Gesu. Mr. Ryan Cayabyab, who arranged the chorale of Take and Receive Medley attended the concert which was participated by famous Ateneo groups such as BukasPalad, Blue Symphony, Ateneo Boys Choir, Ateneo High School’s Glee Club and Dulaang Sibol, Ateneo College Glee Club and the The Ateneo Chamber Singers.

8 December 2008. UP ICTUS celebrated their anniversary with a blessing of their exhibit at the AS Walk, and a mass at the Delaney Hall.

8 December 2008. Sch. Patrick Nogoy SJ gave a recollection to the UP CLC members at their tambayan in UP. Mass was with ICTUS. Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ, Chaplain, was presider.

5 December 2008. UP SPED had a mass at the College of Education lobby.

3 December 2008. UP Organization of Business Economics Majors (UP OBEM) had their mass at the Economics Building with UP Chaplain, Fr. Jboy Gonzales SJ. UP OBEM is grounded on 3 objectives: unity, service, and excellence. Its vision is to provide a venue and create an environment that is responsive to the needs of OBEMers and conducive to social responsibility, academic, professional, and personal development so as to create OBEMers who will be future leaders and economic catalysts, all within the spirit of family.

28 November 2008. The Centennial Memorial Service at the Carillon Plaza, UP Diliman, was moving. With music from the UP ROTC Band and the Carillon, the Memorial Service was made more meaningful with the UP Rayadillo, UP Corps and the ROTC’s gun-salute commemorating those who have died for the past 100 years, especially those who volunteered for the war and the first quarter storm. With alumni Kat Tantiansu, her mom and friends, the UP Chaplaincy helped in organizing the event. Religious organizations such as UPSCA, ICTUS, UPCLC, YFC and CYA led the people in prayer. Present were Mr. Benjamin Sandoval (Executive Director of the UP Centennial Commission), Ms. Rufina Jorge (Treasurer of the UP Alumni Association) who illuminated the Unity Candle, MMDA Chair Bayani Fernando, and Mr. Abdulhadi Daguit of the Institute for Islamic Studies who recited blessings together with the prayers from Fr. 21 November 2008. The UP Chaplaincy Jesuits and the different religious organizations started an innovative catechism class called, “Ca-Chat” at the UP Alumni Hostel Restaurant near the bowling alley. Ca-Chat is short for CAtechism for CAtholics done like an informal CHAT. There are three panelists who answers any questions from the students: Rev. Oliver Dy SJ and Chris Fajardo SJ for theology and doctrine, and Fr. Ritchie Genilo SJ for moral questions. Fr. Genilo SJ teaches at the Loyola School of Theology. Ca-Chat offers free coffee or iced tea for the participants. Questions concern Scriptures, Dogma/Doctrine, Sacraments and Morals, and Pastoral Concerns. More pictures, click here.
